The Average Salaries of Professional Male Football Players 2010
Position
Certain NFL positions may attract a higher average salary than positions which can easily be replaced by another player. According to Sports Illustrated, the quarterback has the highest average salary at approximately $1.9 million. Seasoned quarterbacks---particularly those with Super Bowl wins on their resumes---will command a higher contract salary, which will raise the average yet again. Defensive backs and offensive linemen are second and third in average salary. The tight end position averaged the lowest.
Events
The Pro Bowl is the NFL's version of an All-Star Game. The players who are involved in this game are considered the best of the best from the league. Salaries of the game's top performers average out higher than those of the league as a whole. According to USA Today, the 2009 Pro Bowl game had 118 participants with an average of $4 million in salaries between them. Of these 118, 15 had an average salary of more than $10 million.
Drafts
The NFL conducts an annual league-wide draft during which teams attain the rights of young college football stars. Players drafted earlier the rounds make more money than those drafted later. According to Yahoo! Sports, in 2008, the average salary for a first-round pick was more than $11 million; second-round picks earned less than $2 million.
Considerations
The "the entire NFL, which didn't place anyone in the top 20 despite being the world's richest sports league" was missing from the list of highest-paid athletes in "Forbes," according to Yahoo! Sports, as of 2009. The NFL's salary cap keeps pay limited. Players looking to fatten their pockets must rely on endorsements from corporations.
